KIT 2 (Overlapping)
STEP 1
Strokes, which are also known as cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), are life-threatening events in which part of the brain is deprived of oxygen. About 700,000 strokes occur in the United States every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 500,000 of them are first-time strokes. Over 160,000 people in the U.S. die from strokes every year. There are two types of strokes. One is an ischemic stroke, which occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted by a blood clot. The other is a hemorrhagic stroke, which occurs when there is bleeding into or around the brain.
STEP 2
1 Brain cells start to die when blood flow to the brain stops, because they do not receive the nutrients and oxygen they need to survive. Quick access to medical care is critical to survive and recover from a stroke. Thanks to advances in immediate stroke treatment, the mortality rate from strokes has declined in recent years.
2 The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in the U.S. conducts and supports research into the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological disorders and stroke. There are a lot of different stroke symptoms, and the type observed depends on the type of stroke that has occurred. There are a number of major general signs and symptoms of a stroke: numbness or weakness of the face, arms or legs; trouble with speaking and understanding (aphasia); vision loss; difficulty walking; confusion; dizziness; loss of coordination and balance (ataxia); and severe headache.
3 When someone shows symptoms of a stroke, a physician will promptly evaluate his or her medical history and immediately perform brain imaging tests, such as a CAT scan and MRI. Prompt treatment, including blood flow recovery to the brain and patient stabilization, is essential. The overall stroke treatment process may include medications, surgery and rehabilitation.
