Tumor, which comes from the Latin word meaning “swelling,” is an abnormal growth or mass of tissue. Tumors are a sign of inflammation and can be benign or malignant. Nearly all tumors are examples of neoplasia, although certain developmental malformations or inflammatory masses may occasionally be called tumors. There are several different types of tumors. Their names usually reflect the kind of tissue they arise in, and may also tell you something about their shape or how they grow. For example, a medulloblastoma is a tumor that arises from poorly developed cells in the inner part of the brain. Diagnosis depends on the type and location of the tumor. Tumor marker tests and imaging may be used; some tumors can be seen on the skin or felt with the fingers.

1 The human body consists of many types of cells. Each type of cell has its own functions. Most healthy cells grow and then divide in an orderly manner to create new cells, as they are needed, to keep the body healthy and working well. However some types of cells divide too rapidly and grow without any order. A group of such cells forms an abnormal mass of tissue called a tumor. Each year in the U.S., more than 16,000 people are diagnosed with brain tumors. Tumors are either benign or malignant.
2 Malignant brain tumors have cancer cells and interfere with vital functions. They are likely to grow rapidly, invade the surrounding tissues, and can be life-threatening. These malignant tumors may put out roots that grow into healthy brain tissue like a plant. If they remain compact and do not have any roots, they are called encapsulated tumors. Benign tumors are generally harmless. However, when benign tumors are located in vital areas of the brain and affect vital functions, they may also be considered malignant.
3 Some brain tumors are referred to by grade. Grade 1 is the least malignant and grade 4 is the most. The grade of a tumor shows how the cells look under a microscope. Cells from higher-grade tumors look more abnormal than cells from lower grade tumors. They also grow faster and are more malignant than lower-grade tumor cells.
ASSIGNMENT 1: What do you think about tumors? Are you interested in tumors? If so, what in tumors do you want to study? Write your thought in 200 words. Deadline to submit is Friday, May 15th.
ASSIGNMENT 2: Presetation. You speak about related topics that you have studied here in this classroom. You have 2-3 minutes.
