Avian influenza is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. The disease occurs worldwide. While all birds are thought to be susceptible to infection with avian influenza viruses, many wild bird species carry these viruses with no apparent signs of harm. ...

KIT 2 (Overlapping)

Step 2
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a syndrome characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It is diagnosed on the basis of clinical criteria. Drug therapy with stimulant drugs, behavioral therapy, and educational interventions are the main treatment options. ADHD is currently considered a disruptive behavior disorder, but it has normally been classified as a developmental disorder. It is said that ADHD affects about 3 to 8% of school-aged children in the U.S., but a number of experts think ADHD can be excessively diagnosed. That is because doctors tend to apply criteria inaccurately. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, there are three types of ADHD: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. Research shows that ADHD tends to run in families.

Step-3
1 Professionals experienced in the evaluation of children with developmental disorders can diagnose autism. Qualified professionals may include pediatricians, pediatric neurologists, child psychiatrists, and psychologists. When diagnosing autism, a review of the child’s developmental history, a clinical interview, and observation of the child are essential. Some professionals may use behavior checklists or standardized screening tests to help with the diagnosis of autism.

2 It is difficult to give a specific diagnosis of autism before age three, but some children show autistic behaviors almost from birth. Rates of development vary in infants and young children. In addition, autism is frequently accompanied by mental retardation or slow learning. You may also find some behaviors associated with autism in children who are mentally retarded, so it may also be difficult to discriminate between autism and mental retardation in very young children.

3 There is currently no cure for autism. Professionals and others who are familiar with autistic people suggest many kinds of intervention in autism. However, you should be careful of any intervention that assures a cure or any particular method that claims to be the only effective approach. Data show that the best intervention for autism or PDD (pervasive developmental disorders) is early intensive intervention that makes use of behavioral methods and speech therapy to remediate particular deficits.
